Located just an hour from New York City and Philly, East Brunswick, NJ may already be considered an escape. But what about when you’re craving that ultimate tranquility that only nature can provide? Just a few minutes down the road is Cheesequake State Park – East Brunswick’s own little oasis. Boasting not one but TWO different ecosystems, this park has something for everyone. Here’s why you might want to escape to Cheesequake this weekend…
On one side of the park you’ve got more of a coastal/marsh vibe – but just a few steps away you’ll find upland forests with various trails winding throughout. Hit up the trails in the spring and summer months and the greenery will overwhelm you. Pack plenty of water – the trails range from 1.5-3.5 miles and range from easy to moderate. All five trails are walkable; only one is designated for hiking and biking.
After you’ve spent a few hours building up a sweat on the trails, there’s not much in the world that’s more refreshing than a nice, cool dip. Head over to the beach and you’ll find Hooks Creek Lake. Swimming is permitted from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, making it a popular spot for those trying to beat the summer heat! Relax in the water and let those problems float away…
For those who find more relaxation on the water rather than in it, six-acre Hooks Creek Lake also allows for boating, canoeing and freshwater fishing.
Don’t expect to see anything too crazy out in Cheesequake, but for those who work (or even live) in NYC or Philly, the occasional chipmunk or turtle should be a nice change of pace! If you’re camping at the park, make sure to secure/hoist your food – or else foxes and raccoons might have some fun!
If you’re looking for a break from deadlines and daily commutes, check out Cheesequake! Right in the backyard for East Brunswick apartment residents and just a quick drive away for those in the larger Hub City area, an oasis is within reach.
